If I thought I could be arsed to upload clips for my sales items, I'd do whatever it took to make the job as easy as possible, and that would include using audio already sitting on my hard drive (I download a lot of the music I own on vinyl from a p2p network, simply because it's easier than ripping it myself for my ipod) or pinching a file from an online store such as Juno.
There's no obligation in the seller's code around uploading clips. I think the audio hosting was set up with the principle of being an exact representation of the individual record you are listing for sale so buyers can hear the quality of the exact piece of vinyl they will be buying.Ĭorrect me if I'm wrong, but I'm not sure I've seen that inferred in any official communication. Its purpose to allow potential buyers the opportunity to hear the vinyl condition of the exact item. That's not the purpose of the function, though. I mean there are loads of records i would love to know what they are and by having a soundclip on the main page would probably double or treble the size of my wants list along with probably most of the discogs users on here to! Now what would that do for sales! All im saying is by having soundclips on the main page it would benefit everyone. I would never trust a reduced bit rate MP3 as a true representation. Fair enough you will hear a jump or a skip but if you get a record with slight crackles, pops or back ground noise etc and record it as a reduced quality MP3 you wont always be able to hear those inperfections as half as clearly as you would listening to the record live. Seriously mate a reduced bit rate quality MP3 recording of a track will not always give you a true representation of the "goodlistening/playing quality". They want to hear the 'play' condition of the vinyl. That's why they want to hear samples, moreso than to just preview the tune: Not necessarily: savvy vinyl buyers are looking for good quality records: good listening/playing quality. Dont get me wrong its a step in the right direction i just feel it would be so much easier and benefit everyone including Discogs if the audio samples where on the main page. Its just a good way of helping people identify the record they are after - thats why it should be on the main page in my opinion. You can take a record that has light crackles and pops then record it and convert it to MP3 and it can sound fine! So it isnt really a very good way of showing the quality of how the record sounds anyway. (Never realised i was so opinionated! :-? lol.)ġ00% agree with everything you say!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It SHOULD be on the main page! Save so much time and server space! 99% of buyers are going to do is listen to the sample of one seller then buy off another who has it cheaper! By putting the audio samples on the main page it benefits everyone. Seems like it would be better to have one good example of a track (even if the sample was from say the cd version) on each release, be it cd vinyl or tape.
I know conditions of vinyl can vary wildly, so being able to hear the actual item being sold would help, but that's what the grading system is for surely? Plus its still ripe for abuse, i wouldn't bother making two clips for two copies of the same record i'm selling so who's to know the quality from the clip. Could save a lot of space and be less prone to mistakes in audio, and be moderated properly. Great feature, but i defiantly think it should be on the main page for the release rather than per seller. I remember there being a time when I didn't even know that this site sold records (and believe this to still be the case with many others, as well), so I figure the placement would be good in the sense that it can't be missed by new comers to this site and saves a click (lol) for the veterans of this site who want to listen to a track without having to go into the sales page.
Say, for instance, this release here that djpositive posted:Ī Moving Now (Extended Mix) (5:15) (Player here)ĪA Moving Now (Italian House Mix) (4:25) (Player here) Question: Is it currently possible to add samples to tracks that are already uploaded to the server?Ĭomment: I'd love the player to be located right next to each individual track name instead of it being hidden in the "Sales" page. Man, this feature takes this site to a whole nother level.
